Game rules

What it is about

You play District Legends outdoors: you visit real places, check in there and collect points and place cards – for places, districts, cities and countries. There are no fights, no teams and nothing gets destroyed. The more you get around and discover new corners, the higher you climb.

• Grey: not visited yet
• Blue: visited
• Gold: you are the mayor
• Purple: legendary place with double rewards

Check-in

• Go to a place. Within 30 metres the check-in button appears.
• Your phone needs an accurate enough location (better than 100 m). It works best under the open sky.
• You can check in at the same place every 12 hours. Other places work right away.
• QR codes: some places have a QR code on site. Scan it when checking in for points ×1.5. With the code it is enough if your phone locates you within 75 metres – GPS is often inaccurate indoors. A photo of the code is not enough: you still have to be there.
• Temporary places such as Christmas markets only exist during their period (dashed outline on the map). Afterwards they disappear from the map – your collected card stays in the album.

Rewards per check-in

Factors multiply, e.g. a legendary place with QR code. Points are the only value in the game: they set your level and your rank.

Place cards

Every place in the game has its own card with its picture. The first time you check in at a place, its card goes into your album. Cards only come from check-ins – so your album only shows places you have really been to.

• The album is sorted by country, city, district and category (e.g. museum, park, bridge). For every city and district you can see how many places there are in total.
• Every further visit is counted on the card. After enough visits it moves up a tier and gives you a one-time reward.
• Filter by category to quickly find, for example, all the museums you have visited.

On the card: 👑 you are the mayor there, ⭐ you were the first to discover the place. Legendary places have a purple frame.

Mayors and guardians

Important: a mayor title is not yours forever. Other players can take it from you at any time – so keep checking in!

• The mayor of a place is whoever checked in there most often in the last 30 days.
• Older check-ins no longer count. If you do not come back, you will lose the title eventually.
• In a tie, the current mayor keeps the title.
• Whoever stays mayor of a place for 90 days in a row becomes its guardian.
• If you allowed notifications, we let you know as soon as someone takes a title from you.

Travelling to other cities

Your home city is the city of your first check-in (you can change it in your profile every 30 days at most). Everywhere else you are a visitor – and visitors are rewarded, even if they visit a place only once:

• Points ×1.5 on every check-in as a visitor.
• As a visitor, every new place gives you its place card too – so your album fills up with cards from all over the world.
• First check-in in a new city: city stamp in your passport, +40 points.
• First check-in in a new country: country stamp, +110 points.
• Travel titles: Wanderer, Cosmopolitan and Globetrotter. The ranking has a “Cities” category.

Levels

Your level rises with your points. Each level needs a few more points than the one before (20 points for level 2, then 15 % more each time).

Points

There is only one value you collect: points. They set your level and your rank. You earn points for:

• Check-ins: +10 points for every check-in
• Discoveries: +15 extra points for every place where you check in for the first time
• Titles: once, when you earn a title for the first time
• Streaks: when you play several days in a row
• Events: on your first check-in during an event (+20 points)
• Place cards and district badges: when a card reaches silver or gold, and for many visited places in one district
• Travel: city (+40) and country stamps (+110) as a visitor

Titles

You choose the title shown under your name in your profile, from all titles you hold.

Discoverer, Mayor, Regular and Guardian exist per place, so you can earn them many times. The points for a title are paid only once per place.

Quests

Daily quests restart every day at midnight, weekly quests every Monday. When a quest is done, claim your reward in the Quests section.

Streak

Every day with at least one check-in extends your streak. Miss a day and it starts over at zero.

District badges

Every place belongs to a district. Visiting many places in the same district earns badges:

Events

Special occasions bring events – in one city or everywhere. During an event you get more points per check-in, and on your first check-in also +20 points. Some events only apply at certain places – often as a challenge: visit the listed places during the event and you earn an extra bonus. Running events and your progress are shown under “Quests”.

Partner rewards

Some places belong to partners – cafés, ice cream parlours, restaurants. You can spot them by the ◆ on the map. Partners can offer loyalty rewards, for example “a free scoop of ice cream on your 10th check-in”.

• Loyalty rewards only count check-ins with the QR code inside the shop (at the counter or till). A GPS check-in still gives you points as usual, but does not count for the loyalty reward – otherwise people could check in outside the door without going in. You can see your progress on the place page and under Profile › Vouchers.
• Once you reach the goal, you get a voucher with a QR code. Show it at the counter; the staff scan and redeem it. Each voucher works only once and only until the date shown.
• After redeeming, counting starts again – if the partner allows the reward more than once. Redeemed vouchers are kept in your archive.

Ranking

There is a worldwide ranking, one for your country and one for your home city. You can sort by points, place cards, cities and countries.

Community and groups

• Following: tap a player in the ranking and follow them. Under “Friends” you then see how you compare. Following needs no approval.
• Play groups: start a group and invite players (at most 50 members). Every group has its own standings with its members’ points, places, districts, cities and countries.
• Visibility: “members only” – only members see the group, joining needs an invitation. “Everyone” – anyone can join, and with 2 or more members the group appears in the group ranking.
• You can leave at any time. If the lead leaves, the longest-standing member takes over.
• Contribute: on every place page you can suggest a photo (+30 points) or a better position (+20 points). From 5,000 points you can suggest entirely new places (+100 points). Points are awarded once we approve the suggestion.

Fair play

• Only play with your real location. Apps that fake your location are not allowed.
• The game rejects and records check-ins that imply impossible travel speeds.
• Cheaters can be suspended. A suspended account no longer counts as a mayor.
• Watch the traffic and do not enter private property. No place is worth putting yourself in danger.
